Do you know what your audience wants?

I’ve seen a lot of people approach content marketing from the standpoint of “I will prove to you why I’m so great.” They produce newsletters and blog posts along the lines of “See what I’ve done.” Or “See what we’re all about.”

While copy like that is appropriate in some places in your web presence, content production isn’t one of them. Content should be information-based, educational, and valuable in a tangible way. Something people can use – whether in a literal sense or as food for thought. If you can show you know your stuff, you’re naturally proving why you’re so great.

Content marketers are better off with the approach, “Let me help you,” providing something of value, that either solves a problem or satisfies a need. In order to do that, you have to know what those needs and problems are.

Ask yourself these questions for each piece of content you produce:

  1. Who is this for?
  2. Why will they care?
  3. What’s their problem?
  4. What do they need?
  5. What questions do they have?

Put yourself in their shoes. If you were them, would the content resonate? Would it be helpful? If so, you’ve produced something that will connect.
