Marketing all over the place? Identify Your Desired End Result

To get your online marketing in line, first you’ve got to decide who you’re targeting. After you know who you want to connect with to grow your business, next up is to identify the end result, or results, you’d like to achieve. What do you want your marketing to do for you?

Identifying a few results you’d like to achieve is key. If you don’t know where you’re going, you can’t get there. Instead you’ll wind up going around in circles, or down a road to nowhere. Marketing cannot be done just for the sake of marketing. You need to have a direction.

Steering in the Right Direction

Focused marketing efforts steer your business in the right direction by guiding the clients you want your way, and moving them forward in the sales process.

What end results would help you achieve your goals for business growth?

Examples of marketing end results that lead to business growth include:

  • More website traffic
  • More email signups
  • More social media followers
  • Engagement with social media followers
  • Your content shared on social media
  • Prospects contacting you directly to inquire about services

Knowing which one of the above, or a combination of the above, end results are what you would like to see happen makes marketing planning and execution much easier. When you focus on achieving a specific end result, it saves you effort and time, as opposed to taking several different routes haphazardly, that may or may not get you where you want to go.

You might even want to define your end results more specifically than the examples above, like this:

End Result: More email signups

  • Grow list segment for X Group through Facebook
  • Grow list segment for Y Group from Events

If this example were in line with your target market, you’d know exactly who to target, and why.

Remember, the end results of your marketing efforts don’t automatically lead to more clients, more money, better projects – those are “big picture goals” – but getting results with the pieces and parts of your marketing can lead you there.
