Marketing all over the place? Create a Plan

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

– Alan Lakein

To get your online marketing in line, you’ve got to: define your target, identify your desired end result, and find out what works in your industry by doing a little market research.

Once you know who you want to market to, and what you want them to do based on proven business-building tactics, you’ll want to put a plan in place.

A marketing plan is powerful for 3 reasons:

  • It keeps you focused.
  • It helps you follow through.
  • It makes marketing easier.

In general, defining a plan up-front, before you launch into any type of webe marketing – be that with website copy, blogging, an online newsletter, or social media – just makes the job of marketing your products and services that much easier. You’re less likely to procrastinate or second guess your efforts, including which ones are worth the effort and money you put into them.

As a bonus, you’re more likely to get excited about your marketing. (It’s hard to get excited about something you’re not sure you should be doing in the first place, because it could prove to be a waste.)

With your marketing plan, you’ll have laid out the things you know are likely to help you get new business, because you’ve done the work of discovering them ahead of time. Executing your plan, step-by-step is much simpler than figuring out what to do along the way. And figuring out how to find the time to do it. You know what to do and when to do it with a marketing plan, so you can integrate it into your work life, and/or delegate tasks as appropriate.

If you don’t have a marketing plan, it’s difficult to know where you’re going and why. Without a carefully thought-out, strategic plan, it’s difficult to achieve the results you want to achieve with your marketing.

Do you have a plan? How’s it working for you?
