Marketing all over the place? Define Your Target

If your online marketing seems haphazard, and is not producing results in the form of new clients, the first way to get it in line is to know your target market. Who do you want to connect with online, to grow your business?

Without knowing EXACTLY where you’re aiming your marketing efforts, you’re not likely to hit a bullseye or even come close. You have to know where your arrow is going, and to see that you have a good chance of hitting the mark – otherwise why waste the effort?

Many entrepreneurs avoid defining a target market because they don’t want to lose any business. (Any business is good business.) However, the world wide web is just too vast to try to make a name for yourself by being “everything to everyone.”

People need to need to know why you’re different in order to remember and refer you. They’re much more likely to make a connection, or to remember one thing than everything and the kitchen sink.

Defining your target market – who you’d most like to work with, and what type of projects you’d most like to take on, doesn’t mean you have to turn down business that doesn’t fit within those parameters. It just means that you’re defining a niche. It becomes much easier for the clients you want to find you, and for you to connect with the people you want to connect with.

To help you define your target market, below are several helpful questions. Answer them based on what is authentic and achievable for you, in your business. You might have to do a little online research if you get stuck.

Who are your ideal clients?

  • What are they like?
  • What are their interests?
  • What do they really want?
  • What types of projects would you most like work with them on?

Where can you find your ideal clients?

How can you engage them?

How can you build a relationship with them over time?

Once you’ve had a thorough brainstorm, you’ll have put together an outline of information that’ll serve as the basis for your marketing plan. By defining your target, it’ll be much more straightforward for you to hit your mark.
